Learning the basics of Digital Marketing as a whole
In this post I am going to break down the basics of digital marketing, what digital marketing is, the different types of digital marketing, etc. My goal is to save you time so you don’t have to search all over the internet like I had to when I started.
As I began researching how to become a performance marketer, I quickly learned that everything starts with understanding the fundamentals — so that’s where we’ll begin.
What is digital marketing and what are the benefits?
First I should explain the two different types of marketing:
Traditional Marketing is a way to promote products using tv, radio, posters, or just doing it in person.
Digital marketing is a way to promote products online. A more convenient way because everyone lives in their phone.
Now the benefits of digital marketing are that it has a global reach unlike traditional marketing. It’s more affordable than traditional and has a two way interaction with customers. Digital marketing is great for smaller businesses to be able to compete with bigger ones as it is scaleable and more affordable like mentioned earlier.
Organic vs Paid Marketing/Different types of Marketing
Organic Marketing is using organic/free ways to market. The different organic marketing strategies consist of:
SEO (search engine optimization)
Social media marketing
Email marketing (organically)
Organic marketing is very effective and usually cost little to no money at all to start. While that is a huge benefit because of that it may take a while to see results compared to paid marketing
Paid Marketing is paying for your content or services rather than doing them yourself. The different paid marketing strategies consist of:
SEM (search engine marketing)
PPC (pay-per-click)
Affiliate Marketing
Paid marketing is very effective and can get you results fast. At the same time it can be on the more expensive end. Combining both paid and search engine marketing together is a brilliant strategy that can get you amazing results.
Explaining a Digital funnel and a more simpler way to describe digital marketing
A Digital Funnel is a marketing technique used to attract customers that doesn’t know anything about your brand, and turn them into buying customers. It’s called a funnel because it starts wide at the top with many potential customers and narrows down to fewer people who take action.
Top of funnel: the goal of the top of the funnel is to bring awareness. Let people know that you are starting a brand or selling a product. You want to attract as much attention as you can
Middle of funnel: the goal of the middle is to educate people. You want to build as much trust as you can, try and help people solve a problem they’re having.
Bottom of funnel: the goal of the bottom is to convince the customer to take action by either buying, booking, or signing up.
Post funnel: the goal is to try and turn customers into repeated buyers in the future by your excellent customer service.
Digital funnels are a staple in many businesses and if used right can really take a business far.
A simpler way to understand digital marketing
Now if you got this far and are still scratching your head to what exactly digital marketing really is then I will try to explain it very simply, this is what helped me understand it better.
Imagine you just set up a lemonade stand to start selling lemonade. Now you could try shouting it out to the world or making posters for people to see, but why do that when you can just text people or post it online? That’s what digital marketing is, using online platforms to promote your business. So let’s say you make posts on social media for people to see online. You also send emails and texts to your friends all saying that you sell lemonade or you even ask your favorite YouTuber to tell their friends, those are all digital marketing strategies that are used to attract customers in real life. It’s a way to inform and bring attention to people without the hassle of having to do it in person.
Conclusion
That wraps up this beginner’s guide to digital marketing. There are plenty of options to choose from — both organic and paid — and each comes with its own learning curve. I hope this post helped you better understand what digital marketing is and gave you a strong starting point.
